What is the value of a broker?
Is life insurance just a commodity? A transactional purchase, like any other discretionary item? I would argue that the purchase of insurance requires careful consideration and understanding, and having the right broker in your corner properly explaining and clarifying all aspects of the policy is fundamental.
All too often in my career, I come across clients who have misunderstood, or been deliberately misled on some of the theoretical inner workings of a policy. Unfortunately this leads to misconception, distrust and poor financial decisions.
With the penetration of social media in our everyday lives and decision making, the value and the skills required for interpersonal relationships seems to be diminishing. I am optimistic, that in the future, trusted relationships will remerge as the solid foundation on which business will be transacted.
I believe the client relationship is the single most important element when purchasing any financial product. Understanding the client’s perspective and needs and respecting their wishes is crucial; but that is where the relationship begins. Sharing knowledge, providing unbiased advice is essential. Doing the right thing and being there for you and your family in good times or bad is the value of what a good broker has to offer. It is something intangible that you cannot get in a transactional process.
I have been fortunate in my career to be accepted and invited to all kinds of cultural events. I have attended countless celebrations and regrettably many funerals. Being successful means giving of yourself, and sharing with others. I like to think that I have made a difference in my client’s lives and I am fortunate to have met all of them. Much of what I have learned about life is through the eyes of others.
